5 Favourite Depict Videos
For part of the pre-prosuction process, we've had to research Depict videos from over the years and find our five favourites. Here are mine and why I like them:
'You Died' -https://www.depict.org/2019/you-died/?category_request=2019
This video appealed to me because I found it quite funny; I think that the narrative makes it funny as the person in the voiceover has an upbeat voice despite the video being in black and white and about death. Therefore, this video to me is of a comedic genre because they are taking an important and deep subject and putting a funny and lighthearted twist on it. I like how the video is animated as it makes it even more humourous and less serious. Also that the video is in black and white, as it makes it seem like a depressing video when in reality it is the complete opposite. I believe that is is also supposed to be based around old films, hence another reason for the black and white and also the very quiet music in the background has an old feel to it.
'Big' - https://www.depict.org/2000/big/?category_request=2000
This video is also one of my favourites because it really made me think because it was so thought provoking. The narrative is of a man saying how he is in big trouble, and has big fines. At first we don't have sympathy for the man but after he says he has a big family to feed, it makes us think twice about his intentions because he is trying to do his best. Furthermore, at the end of the video, when the camera does an extreme close up to his face looking down from the building and he says 'It's a big jump', it makes us feel sympathy for the character as he is thinking of ending his own life through trying to care for his family. The video starts off with an extreme long shot, when he's walking around his town. He is portrayed as happy and quite rebellious. After every scene, the video jumpcuts to a different location. For instance: on one scene, he is on a bus but the next, he is by a car. I believe natural/ambient lighting is used for this video as it is pretty much all filmed outside in the daytime.
'Fink' -https://www.depict.org/2001/fink/?category_request=2001
This video is more of a comedy video, about a boy who is kicking posts. He then turns it into a little tune, which makes the video quite entertaining. The narrative is based around somebody called 'Fink' who was part of a post kicking community. There are mostly extreme long shots, when the guy is seen kicking posts and he is from a distance. There is no dialogue, however, there are the sound effects of the post kicking. I think that some of the sounds may be non-diegetic and added on during editing in order to make the tune. All lighting in this video is ambient, meaning it is all natural because it is filmed outside. At the beginning of the video, there is a little music which is used as an intro, it sounds like old music which matches the video as he is looking through an old book. Overall, this video has a comedic tone which makes for a very entertaining video.
'Wake' -https://www.depict.org/2011/wake/?category_request=picks
This video is about a lady who wanted her wake before she died. The video starts off with an establishing shot, which sets the scene as to where this wake is taking place. This then moves to a camera pan of the lady's friends and family at her wake. Voiceovers are used when either she or the people she knows are talking; whilst shots of the wake are on-screen. This makes it seem like a documentary style video.
'Candy Crime' - https://www.depict.org/2011/candy-crime/?category_request=2011
This video is a comedy video about a gang who has a lollipop and is confronted by a gang. They exchange items and one of the gang members ends up giving her a gun, which she then puts into her bag. This adds a comedic element to the video. In one point of the video, here is a 'low shot' looking up to the gang. This is supposed to be from the girl's point of view and show how superior the gang seem to the girl. The lighting of this video is all ambient lighting since it is filmed outside.
